An extract from IAHGames interview with Adrian Tan,
Music Director of FANTASY COMES ALIVE!
Fans of VG & Anime music can expect a large selection of music from video games and anime features ranging almost 20 years - from old classics like Tetris and Castlevania to modern classics like Final Fantasy and Granado Espada. Preparations are going well - all the music that the audience will hear are brand new arrangements by our arranger Nicole Brady who herself is a prolific composer who has written music for many video games, anime and feature films. It was a challenge translating the games soundtracks to a 'live' acoustic setting - I think the audience will be in for some surprises based on what they know from the games, and what they will hear in concert.
For example, Play! A Video Game Symphony, Video Games Live, Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds.
The examples IAHGames gave feature a large symphony orchestra - we are putting on a small chamber orchestra. This gives us an opportunity to create a more intimate setting, and also be more versatile. Play! and VGL have become international commercial events - we've had the opportunity to work closely with composers like Hitoshi Sakimoto and Hideki Sakamoto to get their inputs into how their music should be translated in 'live' performance.
We wanted to present a very different experience for the audience, that means determining which pieces to play, how to present them, in what sequence, etc. The overall concept was to create an evening where the fans can experience the music from a new perspective. It is also a tribute to a genre of music and the composers who created them.
Personally, I really enjoy the segment featuring the 8-bit music from the games made in the late 80s and early 90s like Castlevania, Tetris, etc. These were games I grew up playing - and to be honest, during that time, the music for the games were quite simple and functional. Not meant to be artistic in anyway, but just to accompany the game experience. However, as we look back at the material today, we find ourselves astonished by how many of those tunes we actually do remember from having heard them played again and again during the game. Bringing them to life, so to speak, is really quite satisfying.
Well, the ensemble is a mix of a chamber orchestra and a rock band - featuring electric guitars, bass guitars, This is because the genre of music is so wide, and encompasses so many different forms such as spanish flamenco music, rock, funk, jazz and pop - we really had to use our imagination to be able to create an ideal instrumental setting to fit these different styles of music.
This was surprising - but the arrangement for Megaman has turned out to be most complicated - mostly because it's a really exciting game, and it's got a lot of fast running notes. It wasn't exactly composed to be performed by a 'live' orchestra - but for a midi sequencer or synthesizer. I was told that even in the recent versions of the Megaman game, the creators have preserved this kind of sound world for the game. The final arrangement has turned out to be a really challenging piece of music, even for our musicians who are themselves very distinguished performers and soloists.

With close to 200 musical scores to his name, Hitoshi Sakimoto's achievements over his 20 year career have placed him and his music production company Basiscape at the forefront of the games industry.
After enjoying music and games during his youth, Hitoshi Sakimoto entered the games industry at the age of 16 with the comic market shooter Revolter. He created an exceptional custom sound driver that resulted in his recruitment in sound programming and sound effects for dozens of games. Thanks to his friendship with Masaharu Iwata, he was able to co-compose eminent shooters Starship Rendezvous, Magical Chase, and Shippu Mahou Daisakusen, among other projects. A turning point was his role on Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, where he produced a quasi-orchestral score for the first time and formed a relationship with Quest developer Yasumi Matsuno. With further landmark scores such as Tactics Ogre, Sword Maniac, and Soukyuugurentai, Sakimoto had established himself as a versatile and idiosyncratic composer.
In 1997, Sakimoto led the fantastical orchestral score to Matsuno's Final Fantasy Tactics, resulting in his exposure overseas and his career with Iwata diverging. In a period of musical exploration and little sound programming, Sakimoto offered an unrelenting motif-obsessed accompaniment to Radiant Silvergun, a dark ambient masterpiece for Vagrant Story, and world music fusions with Legaia 2: Duel Saga. In October 2002, he established the game music production company Basiscape with Masaharu Iwata and Manabu Namiki. Initially dedicated to promoting independent artists, Sakimoto focused on several major projects during the first few years of its existence Breath of Fire V, Perfect Prince, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Stella Deus, and Gradius V though administrative responsibilities limited his time.
On 2006's Final Fantasy XII, Sakimoto offered an exuberant symphonic score later downgraded for its DS sequel. In the last two years, Sakimoto has redefined Basiscape to become the most productive game music production company. This has resulted in the employment of five more composers and increased capacity for administrative tasks, sound programming, sound effects creation, and voice editing. On projects such as Grim Grimoire, Odin Sphere, Deltora Quest: The Seven Jewels, Coded Soul, and Elminage, Sakimoto created several promotion-worthy major themes while secondary members of his company handled most of the rest. Sakimoto nevertheless scored much of A.S.H., Final Fantasy Tactics A2, and Opoona while dabbling in non-game projects such as vocal album Colors of Life and the animes Romeo X Juliet and The Tower of Druaga.
